Technique Tone-Ups – Summary of Levels

In each assigned key, the student will…

Level 1: Major Keys

  • Play major 5-finger patterns, hands separately and together
  • Play a tonic triad at the end of each pattern

Level 2: Minor Keys

  • Play minor 5-finger patterns hands separately and together
  • Play a tonic triad at the end of each pattern

Level 3: Major Keys

  • Play major tetrascales
  • Play I, IV and V triads in root position

Level 4: Minor Keys

  • Play natural minor tetrascales
  • Play harmonic minor tetrascales
  • Play tonic triads

Level 5: Major Keys

  • Play single-hand major scales, one octave, hands separately
  • Play I, IV and V7 chords in root position
  • Play I-IV-I-V7-I common-tone progressions
  • Play 2-octave, hand-over-hand I chord arpeggios

Level 6: Minor Keys

  • Play single-hand natural minor scales, one octave, hands separately
  • Play single-hand harmonic minor scales, one octave, hands separately
  • Play i, iv and V7 chords in root position
  • Play 2-octave, hand-over-hand, i chord arpeggios

Level 7: Major Keys

  • Play single-hand major scales, one octave, hands together
  • Play I, IV and V7 chords in root position
  • Play I-IV-I-V7-I common-tone chord progressions
  • Play I chords in root position, first inversion and second inversion
  • Play I chord hand-over-hand arpeggios the full length of the keyboard

Level 8: Minor Keys

  • Play single-hand natural minor scales, one octave, hands together
  • Play single-hand harmonic minor scales, one octave, hands together
  • Play single-hand melodic minor scales, one octave, hands together
  • Play i, iv and V7 chords in root position
  • Play i-iv-i-V7-I common-tone chord progressions
  • Play i chord hand-over-hand arpeggios the full length of the keyboard

Level 9: Major Keys

  • Play 2-octave major scales
  • Play root position I, IV, ii, vi and V7 chords
  • Play I-IV-V7-I common tone progressions
  • Play I, IV and V7 chords in root position, first inversion and second inversion
  • Play single-hand I chord arpeggios, 2 octaves, hands separately

Level 10: Minor Keys

  • Play 2-octave natural, harmonic and melodic minor scales
  • Play i, iv and V7 chords in root position
  • Play i-iv-V7-i common-tone chord progressions
  • Play i chords in root position, first inversion and second inversion
  • Play single-hand i chord arpeggios, 2 octaves, hands separately

Level 11: Major Keys

  • Play major scales using the following pattern: 1 octave (up and back) in
  • quarter notes, 2 octaves in eighth notes and 3 octaves in triplets
  • Play root position I, IV, ii, vi and V7 chords
  • Play I, IV and V7 chords in root position, first inversion and second inversion
  • Play I-IV-ii-V7-I common-tone chord progressions
  • Play single-hand I chord arpeggios, 3 octaves, hands together

Level 12: Minor Keys

    • Play natural, harmonic and melodic minor scales: 1 octave (up and back) in quarter
notes, 2 octaves in eighth notes and 3 octaves in triplets

  • Play i-iv-V7-i common-tone chord progressions
  • Play i, iv and V7 chords in root position, first inversion and second inversion
  • Play single-hand i chord arpeggios, 3 octaves, hands together
